GOOLSBY FAMILY HISTORY
By James Z. Goolsby Jr.© (2003)
![]()
The following is a recount of the family history as best I can find out from my own recollections, from Totsie Goolsby ,Oreta J. Goolsby , Elizabeth S. Goolsby, an account from Clyde Goolsby , and The Goolsby Family Bible. The history of the Goolsby Family is quite scarce from the above sources but here is what I have put together, an * in front of a name denotes my direct lineage:
(From Clyde Goolsby ):
William Jasper Goolsby married Sarah Jane High in 1838 in Monticello, Jasper
County, Georgia. Sarah High was born in Jasper County Georgia and died near
Hughes Springs, Texas. Jasper Goolsby preceded his wife in death by years, and
died in Titus County
Texas. Sometime in, or about, 1878 Sarah High Goolsby moved
to Hughes Springs, *Note,
Sarah stated on a pension application that she lived 40 years in Daingerfieldd,
Tx. She is last found on the 1880 Morris County Census living with her son
William and his family)
Texas with her children. Jasper and Sarah had 5 children, three boys and two girls - the two girls died young. Their lineage is as follows:
Name: * Jasper Goolsby - B: 25 June 1816 D: 28 May 1879
Marriage: Sarah Jane High - B: 05 Nov. 1817 D: 30 Oct. 1902
Children:
Elizabeth Goolsby - Birthdate 1839 - Died young no date known
* James Monroe Goolsby - B: 16 Mar 1841 - D: 1 Feb. 1921
Julia Goolsby - Birthdate 1850 - Died young no date known
John J. Goolsby - Birthdate 1852 - Death date unknown
William H. Goolsby - Birthdate 1853 - Death date unknown
James Monroe Goolsby was born in Monticello, Georgia on March 16, 1841 and was a Confederate Veteran who served under General Sul Ross. He married Sarah Frances O'Dell who's mother, was Sarah Childress. Her mother, Mary Ann, was the daughter of Colonel Armstrong of Virginia, I think his wife was a Livingston. Grandfather O'Dell was Solomon Evans O'Dell, his mother was an Evans, and a descendent of Jonathan Evans who was owner of the land on which William Penn signed the Treaty of Peace. On this land Jonathan Evans operated an iron foundry. Grandfather O'Dell was reared as a Quaker but later was a Methodist preacher, he owned a cotton factory.
James Monroe Goolsby came back to Hughes Springs, Texas after the CIVIL WAR ended and married Sara Frances (Fannie) O'Dell on Dec. 24, 1867 at Hughes Springs. There were three sons and four daughters born to this union.
The Hughes Springs Masonic Lodge # 671 A.F. & A.M. was organized December 13, 1888 with J.M. Goolsby, J.S. officer and A.A. Goolsby charter member.
James Monroe Goolsby died in Anson, Texas of a Heart attack on Feb. 1, 1921. He was a member of the Hughes Springs Methodist Church, South for fifty years. Sarah O'Dell Goolsby died in Anson, Texas and is buried beside her husband.
