John W. High was the oldest  son of Wiley Turner High and Elizabeth Duke High both born 1816 Georgia. He is listed as on the 1850 Jasper County Census in Ga. He may be the child under 5 on the 1840 Census. So that would make him born before 1840. However 1840 is the date of birth is the one most used. He is on the 1870 Houston County Census , age 30. His brother Robert is living with him and John is a blacksmith in Crockett Texas.
He is on the 1880 Houston County Census with wife Lucy and family, age  40
He married Lucy Catherine Huntsman on 9-3-1969. She was born 10-13-1850 and died on 2-13-1938 She is buried in Bynum Cem. in Crockett, Texas She was the daughter of Bolton Huntsman s/o William C Huntsman. Lucy's  mother was a Hallmark.
*On his wife's Confederate Pension file she give John's  birth date as 8-10-1838 and his death on 8-18-1881.
His widow who was in her 90's had trouble proving this at the time. A witness was Edward Fletcher said John entered at Jacksboro an left from Parker County as a member of  Greens Brigade. John then returned 4 years later with Mr. Fletchers brothers. In 1931, Lucy received a letter detailing another John W. High  that had  enlisted at Canton on March 29th 1862. Prisoner of war records that this John W. was captured Jan 11, 1863 and released at Camp Douglas, Ill on taking an oath of renunciation and allegiance. In 1935 Lucy's granddaughter Edith,  ties again to help her grandmother with the pension. She claims that John W. served as a blacksmith for the army near Jacksboro Texas. Adjutant General Office sends a letter regarding this matter on April 5, 1935. It states that the John High who was captured in 1863 is shown on the rooster as a shoe maker in Tyler Texas for October and November of 1864. She finally get a pension approved in July 1935, 4 years after she first applied.
