| * Notes on John High 1787-1790 N.C.
Listed 1830,1840 and 1850 Jasper County Ga. Census There is John High on the 1820 census in Green County in 1820 but not known if this is the same John High There is a John High that buys 3 acres from a William Steward in 1819 in Green County. I don't think this is our John High. William Steward is listed from Oglesthorpe County. Our John High has a wife on the 1830 census and they have a child born in 1832 but other than that there is no mention of her. In 1850 he lives next door to his son Wiley T. and family. Living with him are his daughters Susan E. High and Julia Ann High. Then there is a Nancy H. High born in Va. on the 1860 Census of Jasper County. Age 71 She is residing with William Woode and Martha Garlington Wood and their children. She is residing with William Woode and Martha Garlington Wood and their children. She is the wife of John High but not our John High. Several members of the Garlington family were located in Ga. Martha brother Thomas is listed as getting married in Green County Ga. Although he moved to Texas he was buried in Chambers Com Al. She is the widow of Joseph Garlington who then married a John High in 1827 in Oglesthorpe County. She had him sign a pre nup which he did with an X. This John High has a will probate in 1837 in Morgan Co. Ga. So this isn't our John High as it lists the children from both of his families. Another women Nancy Fitzpatrick, also married a John T. High according to information in a family bible. She married first a John Stark and then a John T. High. This came from the Wittington family in New Boston, Tx. She dies before 1827 and John High applies for the adminstration of her estate in 1830. This can't be the mother of Susan or Juliane as they were born later. Although there is a note that John High was in the war of 1812 from Jasper County, I have not been able to find him on any lists or rosters. There was a letter for John High at the Jasper Post Office in 1838 and a John High served on a grand jury in 1844. He may have gotten a land grant in the 1820 Land Lottery in Jasper. A search of deed by the Georgia State Archives could not find any land owned by John High up to the end of the 1890's. But Land grants were handled differently and would not be included in the deed records until the property sold. We find him next on the 1860 Titus County Tx. census. He is living with his daughter Sarah High Goolsby and family. Wiley's widow Mary Elizabeth Duke High and her children are living near by. He is still alive on the 1870 census at age 84. But no further record of him. The Court house in Mt. Pleasant burned and lost all records in this time period. I believe John is buried at Harris Chapel Cemetery in Cass County. The only marker is a piece of weather beaten concrete, looks like a rock. It is marked with an H. But he is in a straight line with his daughters, Sarah Goolsby and Martha Wise. and their families. He is also close to the grave of the widow of his son John T. High . I have been unable to find the name of John's wife and the mother of his children. I would appreciate any information on him as he is my brick wall. e-mail: thecrystallady@hotmail.com |
