What is a Poem

It is not a musical instrument on which you play.
Yet it often plays a tune in a very special way.
It is not a canvas painting but it is full of imagery.
At times it's so explicit, dot the I and cross the T.
Or can be vaguely reminiscent, told so dreamily.
With a drum and fife, stepping out across space.
Waltzing by, with memories of satin and old lace.
A poem can be expressions of rapture and delight.
A horror tale told with lightening flashing in a night.
Poems may be a line or two, a page or even more.
Peeking in a writer's mind before he shuts the door.
Sometimes without reason, sometimes without rhyme.
Often times some pretty words, written on a line.
