Love

Our lesson for today is taking from the First Corinthians.
You might want to grab your bible and turn to Chapter 13 of First Corinthians

If your bible is the King James version
it will be a little different from the New Jerusalem Bible
so you might find it interesting to compare them.
I will be quoting lines from one of most loved and often quoted chapters
in the King James Bible Chapter 13 of First Corinthians.
But I will also quote verses from the same chapter of the New Jerusalem Bible.
In comparing the two it might help to clarify the meaning of the chapter.

Starting with the King James version, I read,
"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have not charity
( Love ) I am be-come as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal."

The New Jerusalem Bible tells it a little different but with the same idea.
"Though I command languages, both human and angelic -
& if  I speak with out love , I am no more a gong booming or a cymbal clashing.

"Verse 2 , King James goes on to say "And though I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge, and even thought I have all faith, So that I could remove mountains and have not Charity (Love) I am nothing."

The New Jerusalem continues along with the similar meaning and declares
" Though I give away to the poor all that I possess, and even give up my body to be burned- If I am without love, it will do me no good what so ever.

Then it goes on to tell us what love is and does.

"Love is always patient and kind.
Love is never jealous,
Love is not boastful , it does not take offense or store up grievances.
Love does not rejoice at wrong doing, but finds its joy in the truth.
It is always ready to make allowance,
to trust, hope  and to endure whatever comes.
Love never comes to an end.
But if there are prophecies, they will be done away with.
If tongues ,they will fall silent; and if knowledge, it will be done away with.
For we know only imperfectly and we prophesy imperfectly;
but once perfection comes, all imperfect things will be done away with
When I was a child, I used to talk like a child and see things as a child does,
and think like a child but now that I have become an adult,
I have finished with all childish ways.
Now we see only reflections in a mirror, more riddles,
but then we shall be seeing face to face
Now I can know only imperfectly
but then I shall know just as fully as I am myself known.
As it is, these remain, faith, hope and love, the three of them,
and the greatest of them is love"
