Sin

My definition of sin would be falling short of the standards of God.

A lot of the civil laws that have governed mankind
can be traced back to the Old Testament to  Exodus
the story of Moses receiving the ten commandments on mount Sinai.

There was not suppose to be  any other God ,
than the God that had brought them out of Egypt
They were not allowed to make any graven images or any kind of effigy,
heavenly body, animated  or  any other objects to worship. .
God said he was a jealous God
and he would punish their children down to the fourth generation.
They were  are not suppose to take the name of God in Vain.
I don’t think the Israelites were not even allowed to speak the name of God.
they were to work 6 days and kept a Sabbath.
That included slaves , servants and wives which was a improvement in their lives.
We are commanded to honor our parents,
Don’t kill,  Don't commit Adultery, Steal, or Bear false witness,
Covet (Desire) anything that belongs to our neighbor’s , from his wife to his stuff.

You can find a list of things that God hates in Proverbs.
Haughty eyes, lying tongue,
hands
that shed blood, heart with wicked thoughts,
feet
that run to mischief, bearing false witness and spreading discord.

By the time we get to the New Testament
we find Jesus boils everything down  to 2 commandments.
Love God and Love your neighbor as your self.
( Matthew 23:36)
Sounds simple, but this includes all the commandments given by Moses.

In Galatians Chapter 5 , Paul lists the works of the flesh,
Adultery, Fornication, Uncleanness, Lasciviousness (lustful),
Idolatry, Witchcraft , Hatred, Variance (discord),
Emulations (envy), Wrath (anger), Strife, Seditions Heresies, Envy,
 Murder, Drunkenness, and Reveling

The Catholic church has their list of sin listed in divided
 into Venial and Mortal Sins.
Some what like misdemeanors and felonies.

That list has evolved over the years
and meaning of some of the original thoughts have changed.
The word now translated Lust once meant Unrestrained excess.
The meaning  used to mean  buying luxury items.

Currently the  Catholic church lists the Seven Deadly Sins
as  Pride, Avarice (Greed), Envy, Wrath(Anger) Lust, Gluttony
and Sloth(lazy)

Man’s idea of what constitutes "what is  sin" may change over the years
but God’s standard is always on the high side.
As Paul says in Romans
"For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God

A tree is known by the fruit it brings forth.
We can judge our spiritual  progress
by the type of fruit we are bringing forth on our tree,
The fruits of the spirit are .
 Humility, Charity, Kindness, Patience,
Chastity, Temperance and Diligence ,

All of us are works in progress and sinners on some levels.
But the good news is that
Paul also tells us in this chapter that there is redemption in Christ Jesus
