Duke University dates back to 1838 origins.
Duke University Chapel was dedicated in 1935. The gothic styled
structure seats 1600 people has 3 pipe organs and 77 stained glass
windows. It is the heart of the religious life at the university. The 210
ft. Bell Tower is the highest building in Durham, N.C. The Carillon
(chimes) consist of 50 bells. Although an affiliate of the Methodist
Church it is a Inter-denominational church that represents up to 20
different faith groups and has a women pastor, Ms. Nancy Ferree
Clark.. The congregation is one of the largest of any university centered
church. In 1985 they started an out reach ministry to help secure
food and shelter for the
for the people of Durham who were in need of help during difficult times.
In recent time they decide to become involved in same sex unions for
members of their church and university. Which the president and dean
decided were in keeping with their religious diversity. |
